Lanzarote - Madeira - Azores
12 days, 850 nm, 4 islands

The first leg, 300 nautical miles from Lanzarote to Madeira, can be demanding. The prevailing strong north-easterly winds around the Canary Islands typically make for a two-day upwind passage, with life under heel and a lively sea state very much part of the experience. Arrival in Madeira is the ultimate reward. We’ll enjoy a full day ashore to explore the island’s dramatic landscapes and outstanding natural beauty.

The next leg towards Santa Maria, the easternmost island of the Azores, takes us into the Azores High weather system. Here, wind strength and direction become more variable and often lighter—conditions that may allow us to hoist the gennaker or symmetrical spinnaker. The arrival in Santa Maria is always warm and welcoming, and a first stroll through the village offers a wonderful introduction to the unique character, charm, and beauty found throughout the Azores.

From Santa Maria, it’s a full day’s sail to Ponta Delgada, the capital of São Miguel. Disembarkation takes place the following day. Staying on for a few extra days to explore and enjoy the island’s remarkable landscapes, volcanic features, and natural pools is highly recommended.

Azores - Madeira - Lanzarote
14 days, 1200 nm, 7 islands

WEEK 1: PONTA DELGADA TO SANTA MARIA

The first leg, 7 days of exploring the Azores, starts in Ponta Delgada, the capital of the island São Miguel. After a 90 nm nightsail we will arrive in Angra do Heroismo, the historic capital of Terceira. A 50 nm passage will get us to the small marina of Velas on Sao Jorge. From there we will sail to Horta on Faial, home of the legendary sailors bar "Peter's Cafe Sport". After sailing around the majestic volcano of Pico we will arrive in Lajes on the south shore of the Island, home of the once flourishing whaling industry. A full 175 nm, 24 hour passage to the most Easterly island Santa Maria will conclude the first week, having covered approximately 360 nm.

WEEK 2: SANTA MARIA TO LANZAROTE

Following a day rest in Santa Maria the next destination will be  Funchal, the capital of Madeira. As we are sailing out of the Azores-high the wind will increase and become prodimantily Northerly, allowing us to cover the 475 nm in less than 3 days. Funchal is one of my favourite stopovers. It's charming, buzzing and laid back. We have a full day off; I will rent a car allowing us to explore the island and hike a 4 hour mountain trail. With the northerly wind increasing in speed the final leg, 320 nm to the capital of Lanzarote, Arrecife, can be a spectular fast one;  downwind ocean sailing at its best. When time allows we will add a stop at the least known but prettiest of all Canarian islands: Isla Graciosa, north of Lanzarote before heading "home" to Arrecife, having covered another 795 nm.
