WEEK 1: PONTA DELGADA TO SANTA MARIA
The first leg, 7 days of exploring the Azores, starts in Ponta Delgada, the capital of the island São Miguel. After a 90 nm nightsail we will arrive in Angra do Heroismo, the historic capital of Terceira. A 50 nm passage will get us to the small marina of Velas on Sao Jorge. From there we will sail to Horta on Faial, home of the legendary sailors bar "Peter's Cafe Sport". After sailing around the majestic volcano of Pico will arrive in Lajes on the south shore of the Island, home of the once flourishing whaling industry. A full 175 nm, 24 hour passage to the most Easterly island Santa Maria will conclude the first week, having covered approximately 360 nm.
WEEK 2: SANTA MARIA TO LANZAROTE

Following a day rest in Santa Maria the next destination will be Funchal, the capital of Madeira. As we are sailing out of the Azores-high the wind will increase and become prodimantily Northerly, allowing us to cover the 475 nm in less than 3 days. Funchal is one of my favourite stopovers. It's charming, buzzing and laid back. We have a full day off; I will rent a car allowing us to explore the island and hike a 4 hour mountain trail. With the northerly wind increasing in speed the final leg, 320 nm to the capital of Lanzarote, Arrecife, can be a spectular fast one; downwind ocean sailing at its best. When time allows we will add a stop at the least known but prettiest of all Canarian islands: Isla Graciosa, north of Lanzarote before heading "home" to Arrecife, having covered another 795 nm.
